Black Berkey and British Berkefeld

What is the difference between Super Sterasyl Ceramic and Black Berkey Filters?

Answer: Super Sterasyl Ceramic Filters remove pathogenic bacteria, cysts, organic chemicals, chlorine and reduce sediment, turbidity and particulate.  Black Berkey Filters do this AND remove lead, MTBEs and other heavy metals.  Both filters have similar life span and require similar cleaning.

Black Berkey filters remove the most contaminants.  Super Sterasyl Ceramic are more durable for travel, but filter a bit more slowly than the Black Berkey. Both are more practical, effective, longer lasting and more durable than the competition.

How does the Berkey compare with an RO (Reverse Osmosis) System?

Answer: The Berkey does not remove beneficial minerals which the body needs whereas an RO system does.  Drinking de-mineralised over a long period of time can actually have adverse health effects.  Additionally an RO system does not remove Pathogenic bacteria unless UV light is added to the system and even then, bacteria can collect in other areas. Overall the Berkey is also far cheaper and requires far less maintenance than an RO system.

Can I purify saltwater in my Berkey or British Berkefeld System?

Answer: No, this will damage the filters.   Removing large amounts of salt from water such as seawater generally requires some form of a distillation system.

Can I run HOT water through my Berkey or British Berkefeld System?

Answer: No, this can damage the filters

What is the life span of a Black Berkey filter?

Answer: About 11,356 litres per filter.  They are self-sterilising and are re-cleanable.  Under normal usage they can generally be used for 3 to 4 years+ making them far more economical than most other systems.

Where can I find detailed information about the Black Berkey filter?

Answer: Click here for a PDF file.Black Berkey®

Do Black Berkey filters remove Fluoride?

Answer: Not by themselves, but with the addition of the PF-2 post-reduction filter, they will remove about 95%.

Where can I find detailed information about the PF-2 filter?

Answer: Click here for a PDF file. PF2™ Reduction Element

Do Super Sterasyl Ceramic filters remove Fluoride?

Answer: Not by themselves, but with the addition of the PF-4 post-reduction filter, they will remove about 95% plus heavy metals and MTBEs.

Is the Berkey Light System BPA-free?

Answer: Yes

Where are the British Berkefeld Super Sterasyl Ceramic Filters made?

Answer: The ones we sell are made in England as stamped on the filter.

I can’t seem to find the washers and wingnuts that go with the spigot; how can I get them?

Answer: Generally these come attached to the spigot so please first check the spigot.  If they are definitely not there, please contact us directly.

I’ve gone travelling with my Berkey Water Filter System and the filters are now really slow, what do I do?

Answer: All you need to do is re-prime the filters. If you lose your priming button, please contact us for a new one.

Seychelle / Fill 2Pure

How do Seychelle Filters Work?

Answer: Seychelle filter technology coordinates all processes of contaminant reduction by Adsorption, Absorption, chemical bonding, chelation, and depth filtration.

Using medical technology Seychelle has created a uniform, absolute 2 micron pore size for better reduction and removal of contaminants. The porous plastic micro filter is impregnated with the finest granulated activated coconut carbon available and Seychelle’s exclusive adsorbing media. These omni-directional pores create a “torturous path” for superior analyte removal capability.

What is BIOSAFE®?

Answer: BIOSAFE® is Seychelle’s exclusively licensed effective antimicrobial polymer filter covering that physically disrupts a contaminant organism’s cell membrane, thereby reducing microbial contamination by four logs or 99.99%.
BIOSAFE® is safe, non-toxic and non-leaching. It is EPA approved with tests performed under NSF standards. BIOSAFE® patented technology has proven to be effective against bacteria, fungi (mould and mildew), yeast, algae and certain viruses. BIOSAFE® is colourless, tasteless, and odourless and has an indefinite shelf life.

What is the difference between Seychelle Advanced and Fast-flow Filters?

Answer: The Fast-flow filter reduces and removes contaminants up to 99.99% including; aesthetics, microbiological, viruses, diseases, chemicals and dissolved solids.  It is designed to have an extremely easy flow rate.

The advanced filter adds an iodinated resin barrier to this which provides additional protection against viruses and bacteria to 99.9999%. The advanced filter is recommended for 3rd world travel or extreme survival use (They are currently used by military and humanitarian organisations in 3rd World environments).

I would like a stainless steel filter bottle with an Advanced filter – is this possible?

Answer: At present, the advanced filters require a squeezable bottle so the stainless steel bottles come with a Fast-flow filter which is still very strong and quite adequate for Australia, New Zealand and similar world regions.

Do Seychelle filters need to be primed or flushed?

Answer: All Seychelle filters are pre-flushed. Each product comes with an instruction manual for exact care.

Do Seychelle filters remove minerals?

Answer: No, Seychelle filters will NOT remove essential minerals from the water, including beneficial trace minerals such as magnesium, potassium and calcium

Will a Seychelle filter remove Salt?

Answer: No, Seychelle filters can only be used with a freshwater source.

Will a Seychelle filter remove Fluoride and Chlorine?

Answer: Yes – At least 99.99% of Chlorine and 90% fluoride.

What are Seychelle Bottles made from – Are they BPA-free?

Answer: All Seychelle products are BPA free; are non-toxic and do not leach.  The plastic bottles are made from only FDA approved # 4 and # 5 plastics and food-grade materials; The stainless steel bottles are made from 304 stainless steel.

Can I put my Seychelle bottle in the freezer?

Answer: Definitely not, the expanding water/ice could damage both the bottle and filter.

Can I put HOT water in my Seychelle?

Answer: No. It can damage the filter.

Can I put liquids other than water in my Seychelle?

Answer: No. Nor would they work with the filter.

How do I store my Seychelle?

Answer: When not using for an extended period, flush chlorinated water through the filter and allow to dry thoroughly with top cap removed. You may remove the filter and wash the bottle separately. Take care when removing the standard filter from the 700ml and 500ml bottles when wet as this filter doesn’t have filter casing and are more fragile when wet.  Reassemble and store.
