With more and more town and city councils across New Zealand and Australia considering or actively adding fluoride to their municipal water supplies, what do you as a New Zealand or Australian resident need to know? What are the risks if any and what can you do about them?
Fluoridation of water started in the 1940s in the USA purportedly as a means to improve the dental health of children and adults. However, over the years through many studies internationally, experts in both the science and health fields are concluding that fluoridation of drinking water is actually poisoning us .
Excessive fluoride (and that is a very small amount – less than 4mg per litre of water) can cause chronic joint pain, osteoarthritis, thyroid disease, bone fracture, kidney disease, cancer, diabetes, endocrine disruption, gastrointestinal issues, male infertility and acute toxicity on the level of arsenic, among other things.
In 2001 at the EPA (USA Environmental Protection Agency) Main Office in Washington D.C., the union of scientists stated: “we hold that water fluoridation is an unreasonable risk.” That is both telling and chilling. As it is, millions in China and India attest to this fact as they suffer from crippling bone diseases caused by drinking water with elevated levels of fluoride.
The majority of European countries have already outlawed water fluoridation or never started it in the first place. It is unfortunate, that New Zealand and Australia are just now adding it now when internationally the dangers of water fluoridation are becoming more and more recognised.
So what can you do? Make your views known to your local city council and in the meantime, purchase and use a quality water purification system that will remove a high percentage of fluoride from your tap water. Some of the best on the market are the Berkey , British Berkefeld and Seychelle/Fill2Pure brands.
The Berkey water purifications systems with Black Berkey filters and the PF-2 fluoride filters will remove about 95% of fluoride. While the Black Berkey filters can be used for up to 3 to 4 years, the PF-2 fluoride filters will need to be changed about every 6 to 12 months.
The British Berkefeld systems using super sterasyl ceramic filters made in England and PF-4 post reduction filters will also remove about 95% of fluoride. Again, while the ceramic filters will last 2 to 4 years, the PF-4 post reduction filters, which fit onto ends of the ceramic filters, will need to be changed about every 6 to 12 months.
The Seychelle/Fill2Pure brand has a product line ranging from water filter bottles to a water pump, family water jug and a benchtop unit. The filters in all of these will remove about 90% of fluoride. You will get about 6 to 12 months usage for most of the filters. The benchtop filter can be used for about 2+ years.
Research, and be aware. Water fluoridation is dangerous and you need to do something about it.
